Profile: Brian Young

Brian Young
Associate Professor of Engineering
Penn State Erie, the Behrend College

My name is Brian Young; I am an associate professor of engineering at Penn State Erie, the Behrend College. I have been teaching full-time in the Plastics Engineering Technology Program since 2001. Prior to 2001, I taught part-time as an adjunct instructor for four years. I teach primarily sophomore level classes in thermoplastic materials and materials processing.

I received my bachelor’s degree in Plastics Engineering Technology in the fall of 1995 at Behrend, it took me close to 12 years to get my four year degree because I worked full time and went to school part time. I got my Masters degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering in 2005 also at Behrend. I am married (happily, of course) and have been since 1988. I have two children; Nathan, 19, and Gabriel, 15.

In my spare time, I make my own beer, lift weights, cross country ski and my youngest son and I started rock climbing last summer. I am a morning person to an extreme extent. I’m usually up by 4:00 am, so don’t be surprised if you get an e-mail from me that was sent at 5:00 am. I drink coffee as though I get paid by the cup to do it, and I love my job.

(Look, in the background, you can see my skull and crossbones tie that I wear when I give quizzes and tests.)
